BIWASE OPERATES A 5 MW WASTE – TO – ENERGY PLANT IN JANUARY 2024

21 12-2023

On December 20, Mr. Ngo Chi Thang, Director of the Waste Treatment Branch of Binh Duong Water and Environment Corporation Joint Stock Company (Biwase), announced that the final stages of the Phase 4 expansion project for waste processing at the Biwase Solid Waste Treatment Complex in Binh Duong, located in Chanh Phu Hoa Ward, Ben Cat Town, are nearing completion and will be ready for operation in January 2024.

The 5MW power generation unit control center designed by Biwase.

The project encompasses the expansion of waste sorting capacity to produce 840 tons of organic compost per day. The waste incineration plant, which also generates electricity, has a burning capacity of 200 tons per day and an electricity generation capacity of 5 MW. In the initial phase, the electricity produced will be utilized internally within the plant through a recycling process. It is projected that the electricity generated from the two generators, powered by metal gas and heat from the incinerator, will initially meet approximately 80% of the electricity requirements for production at the Binh Duong Solid Waste Treatment Complex.

The total investment for the project amounts to 835 billion VND (equivalent to over 34.4 million USD). Of this, the organic composting unit is valued at 364 billion VND (nearly 15 million USD), while the incineration plant combined with power generation is valued at 471 billion VND (over 19.4 million USD). The project is partially funded by loans from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), totaling 20 million USD, equivalent to 480 billion VND.

To date, all technologies have been designed and implemented by Biwase engineers, utilizing widely adopted contemporary technologies, with the exception of the power generation turbine engine, which is supplied by Siemens.

Notably, with consultation and technical support from foreign experts and engineers, the entire plant has been constructed by Biwase's own team of engineers and workers, who have fully mastered the technology and operate it efficiently. Furthermore, many pieces of equipment have been researched and manufactured by Biwase itself, meeting standards equivalent to imported products. This has significantly reduced the overall investment costs for the project.

Biwase's Waste – to – energy plant is scheduled to begin operation in January 2024.

With the increase in fertilizer production capacity to 840 tons per day, Biwase ensures that 100% of the household waste in the area, approximately 2,350 tons per day, will be sorted and processed into compost. The plant is currently capable of handling up to 2,520 tons per day.

Currently, 100% of the waste in Binh Duong province is thoroughly collected and treated. Biwase is refining and mastering waste treatment technologies, recycling products from waste, utilizing heat from incinerators for power generation, and producing eco-friendly organic fertilizer.

According to Biwase, the increase in fertilizer production capacity serves as a contingency plan for the coming years to ensure the ability to receive and process waste across the entire province. This approach provides sufficient time to prepare for the next capacity expansion.
