Remark On Waste Water Treatment Technology In Binh Duong By A Leading Professor (to be quoted from speech of Dr.Lam Minh Triet at Inauguration ceremony of Thu Dau Mot Waste Water Treatment Enterprise)

Southern Binh Duong Sewerage system includes: collection network and centralized Wastewater Treatment Plant. Project’s objective is to improve environmental sanitation, protect community’s health, make urban more beautiful and civilized, contribute to improving and protecting Sai Gon water source which is being used for water supply.

The collection network of the project is separated from rain water sewage system. Connection for households, factories, agencies are being strictly and carefully implemented in order to thoroughly collect all domestic wastewater to fully meet design treatment capacity of the plant.

Treating technology applied for this project is one of the advanced technologies, which was chosen on scientific basis and suitable with actual conditions in southern area of the province and firstly introduced in Binh Duong: that is Advanced Sequence Batch Reactor - ASBR, where inlet of wastewater keeps on going through different steps of the whole treatment process. Capacity in phase I is 17,650 m3/day (meanwhile, the traditional SBR is only suitable for smaller capacity from 5.000 – 7.000 m3/day).

Whole treatment process will go over steps as: wastewater from generating source à receiving tank/coarse screener à sedimentation tank by sand with air blower à ASBR process à disinfection by Ultra Violet à stabilization tank à Sai Gon river

ASBR has some good points in sludge and odor treatment such as:

+ Flexibly suitable with fluctuate inlet flow and loading (in case insufficient connection to the main collection sewer);

+ Automatic control of the whole treatment process in wastewater plant

+ High treatment effectiveness, outlet wastewater can meet standard QCVN 14:2008/BTNMT (Class A)

+ No need for large land area compared with other technologies, allow to narrow down the buffer zone, or sanitary isolation distance from population area.

+ Easily to raise design capacity up to 30% compared with traditional SBR line

+ High disinfection quality by ultra violet and safe for microorganism in outlet wastewater compared with injecting chlorine

Actual result in commissioning period with running capacity 3,000 m3/day showed that quality of wastewater after treatment satisfied the required standard.

The result achieved from commissioning period is very positive and is evaluated reliable for future. However, following works are still a lot and required further suitable attention.

+ Continue connecting to the system to transmit enough volume in main sewer leading to treatment plant of phase I.

+ Continue operating the plant with increasing capacity until it meets the design capacity;

+ Fully monitor quality of inlet and outlet wastewater, carefully evaluate the treatment effectiveness

+ Monitor sludge in the bottom of the tank, they are maybe higher than air distribution disc that properly stop and reduce air supply ability to get suitable solution.

+ Propose to complete ASBR technology in the actual conditions of VN for future copied application.

With the role of an scientist in water sector, once again, I highly appreciate the project owner for his effort, creativeness and decisive in applying new and advanced technology. I also appreciate the concensus and support from provincial leader, other related departments and local people.

Doing this project is the policy and enthusiasm of the province to improve environmental sanitation, public health and beauty looking for urban area – Thu Dau Mot city and contribute to improve as well as to protect water source in Sai Gon river to serve for water supply purpose and specific river sightseeing of water body flowing through Binh Duong, Tay Ninh and HCMC.
